funny little thing called Sage

Taking Micah for a ride.

Driving home from school:

S: Did you see his hair?"
A: "Shoot I missed it. What was it like?"
S: "It was like....a muffin."

I peeked in the rear view mirror to see the dude in question....he had a giant 'fro. Gives a new meaning to the word muffin top.

Shane was having a hard time getting his ski boots on one morning recently and Sage had some wisdom to share:

"Just think about skiing, not your boots. I think about cake when I eat my salad and then I don't taste it."

Buck

A note: We have a lovely buck (male deer) who would come and spend autumn days sunning himself in our backyard. We would always make sure to tell Sage when he was around..."Sage the buck is back." Now on to the story.

Yesterday Sage and Shane saw a woman on the street corner with a sign that read,

"Down on my luck, need a buck."

He read the sign to Miss Sage and she replied,

"We have a buck at our house. But he hasn't been around for awhile. Why does she need a buck?"

Shane explained.

Sage Spouts

(while visiting us at the hospital):

"You know what's great about hospitals? You don't have to clean your room."
________________________________________________________________

Another hospital visit where she gleefully related eating a yogurt parfait from Whole Foods...in the bathtub :

"Dad and me were getting into all kinds of trouble."

Sage recently went on a school field-trip to the Haagen-Daas store downtown. She couldn't wait to tell me about it when she returned home:

"I got ice cream at the Hoggin-Dog store."

When I make a mistake I usually say "Crap, crap, crap!"

Someone was listening and when she made a mistake recently I heard:

S: "Crab. crab. crab!"

Glad she heard that one wrong.

Overheard

Sage to friends at park:

"My baby brother has eczema. That means he's really sad and my parents are really tired."

Yep...that about sums it up.

P.S.
Micah wears satin gloves on his hands and legs that way he can't do as much damage when he scratches

Homesick

Sage and I went to the park the other day...it didn't last long.

We've been home lots because of the snow and cold (it's been hovering around 9 degrees 'round here) and the lack of friends.

Tonight Sage finally cracked and blurted out:

"I'm homesick! I'm sick of being home all the time!"

Twices

We had burritos for dinner and even after a second helping Sage was still hungry. I agreed to let her have an apple. Shane walked in while we were cutting and Sage announced,

"I'm having an apple 'cuz I just had twices and I'm still hungry."

I think you mean seconds kiddo.

Eggs

Sage and I were cracking eggs the other day and she decided to take the job of choosing which eggs to crack.

S: "I only pick the eggs who are sitting quietly."

I think we have Sunbeam on our hands.

Cold

This morning Sage was drinking a mango smoothie and got cold. She ran and put on her gloves and my beret; those helped but apparently not quite enough.

S: "My face is still cold."

A: "Well I'm not sure what you can do about that."

S: "How 'bout a beard? All over my face and neck...."

That ought to do it.

A Few From Sage

*Sage and I were walking home from a friend's house and she was demonstrating her "sashy" (sah-shay) ballet move where you run sideways.

"I'm sauteeing!"

*We rarely use the microwave. But today Shane needed to get some gunked on food off a glass so he popped it into the microwave. Sage heard it on and asked:

"What's in the microphone?"

*We were singing "How Firm A Foundation" and when we ran across the word "refuge" Sage asked what it meant.

A: "It means a safe place."

S: "This is a refuge."

*Listening to Suzuki piano:

S: "Who's playing the piano?"

A:
"A man named Haruko Kataoka."

S: "Why is his name that?"

A:
"He's Japanese."

S: "Why is he Jackanese?"

A Little Shepherd Gave Us The Best Gift of All

Christmas 2007

One little tradition we have is to hide a star and manger, dress Sage up like a shepherd and have her go and find the Baby Jesus. This year Shane and I co-starred as Mary and Joseph (as per her request).

When Sage found the manger (her baby cradle stuffed with hay) we told her the news about the baby. Later that night Shane and I wrote down her response:

"Are you teasing?"

"Awww...ohhhh...can I touch your belly?"

"Did you just put it in there today?"

"You never had a baby in your belly before."

Telling Sage was definitely our favorite part of Christmas.

One of Sage's jobs is to clear her plate after a meal. One night, not too long ago, she hopped down from the table leaving her dish behind.

A: "Sage did you clear your plate?"

S: "I know I did! (walks back to table and sees the plate in question)
But it must have run back to the table!"

Our Girl

sage: (noun) : a mentor in spiritual and philosophical topics who is renowned for profound wisdom

a recent observation:

"Do you know what Jesus made? Everything! I think when he was done he had a big drink of water...he was tired."

a conversation with an imaginary friend:

"...he shall grow up as a tender plant out of dry ground..." (that one's from Isaiah)

I Love My Job

When I'm in a hurry I give Sage a boost out of the car. It's a chance for a little nuzzle and kiss/hug. Today as I carried her out she said," You're my bestest Mommy."

That's the bestest compliment I could ever receive.

English Is a Crazy Language

S: "Can I have a ride in the coower Mama? (she gets in our big huge cooler and we push her around)

A: "Not right now...I'm pooped."

S: (incredulously) "You pooped in yer pants?!?"

A: (no answer, trying not to laugh)

S: "You're going to poop in yer pants?"

I explained.
